In April 2026, the learning community webinar featured Rina Hisamatsu, MPH, RDN, MCT2D's Registered Dietitian, Domino’s Farms Family Medicine and Dina Griauzde MD, MSc, Dipl. ABOM, Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Research Director, Michigan Medicine Weight Navigation Program, Co-Medical Director (VA Ann Arbor), Medical Weight Management.
This learning community event focused on addressing common myths and facts about low-carbohydrate diets, presented by Dr. Dina Griauzde and Rina Hisamatsu. The presenters reviewed definitions of low-carb diets, discussed potential side effects like keto flu and constipation, and clarified that nutritional ketosis differs from diabetic ketoacidosis. They addressed concerns about heart health, explaining that well-formulated low-carb diets may improve cardiovascular markers despite potentially higher saturated fat intake, and reviewed evidence showing sustainability of low-carb diets through case studies showing high retention rates over 5 years. The session also covered protein intake recommendations and kidney health, emphasizing that low-carb diets are adequate protein diets rather than high-protein diets, and concluded by addressing concerns about holiday season challenges and providing strategies for patients to manage social eating situations while maintaining their health goals.
