In February 2026, the learning community webinar featured Caroline Richardson MD, Chair of Family Medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University And Care New England, Co-author of 2025 ADA MASLD Consensus Statement.
Dr. Caroline Richardson, Chair of Family Medicine at Brown University, presented on metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its connection to type 2 diabetes. She explained the updated terminology and screening guidelines, emphasizing the importance of FIB4 calculations and fibroscan tests for detecting advanced fibrosis in patients with diabetes. Dr. Richardson discussed treatment options, including GLP-1 agonists, pioglitazone, and alcohol use disorder medications, while highlighting the need for aggressive management of metabolic risk factors. She also covered the role of hepatitis B and C screening, as well as strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance in patients with cirrhosis. The presentation concluded with a review of top actions for managing MASLD in type 2 diabetes patients, including medication choices and screening recommendations.
